Haruhi holds the fate of the universe in her hands . . . lucky for you she doesn't know it!
Meet Haruhi - a cute, determined girl, starting high school in a city where nothing exciting happens and absolutely no one understands her.
Meet Kyon - the sarcastic guy who sits behind Haruhi in homeroom and the only boy Haruhi has ever opened up to. His fate is now tied to hers.
Meet the S.O.S. Brigade - an after-school club organized by Haruhi with a mission to seek out the extraordinary. Oh, and their second mission? Keeping Haruhi happy . . . because even though she doesn't know it, Haruhi has the power to destroy the universe. Seriously.
The phenomenon that took Japan by storm - with more than 4.5 million copies sold - is now available in the first-ever English edition. (For some reason I can not for the life of me remember writing this line. Hmm?)
What is there to say about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. First there is my expectations. There weren't really that many because I have never really heard of this book before and when I read the summary to the second book I will admit I was intrigued. I liked the thought that someone who was interested in the supernatural would end up with such a huge power. I thought that it would be a good read and that the characters sounded interesting so I immediately decided to check out the books from the library. I felt it would be a five star read, easily.
What I got? Very different. The plot is there I will admit to that the problem is that I felt that the so-called-climax of the story was just not up to par with how much it was built up through out the rest of the book. The scenes leading up it were repeated repeatedly and I found myself becoming bored very fast. I almost don't even want to go on to the characters. Could they be anymore contrived. On every page we are forced to hear how hot/cute Mikuru is when she does anything. For Nagato and Haruhi it is how whenever they do something 'normal' Kyon suddenly finds them attractive too. This book is practically a soft core porn. Every time Haruhi and Mikuru get into the same room with each other Haruhi is doing something 'perverted' with her. Haruhi is so obnoxious and Kyon and her are so obviously foils for one another is is frustrating.
Now that you know what I did not like I will tell you what I did like. In list form:
1. Suzumiya(I really like that name and I also watched a bit of the anime so I know how to pronounced too).
2. Still thinking...
3. Haruhi's ability.
4. The author's writing style.
5. Umm... Nope. That's all.
